The competition proposal for the Center for Promotion of Science consists of an overall urban concept / masterplan for the future faculty of science and research campus on New Belgrade's Blok 39, as well as the architectural intervention of the Center for Promotion of Science.
The proposed urban concept for the materplan aims to create a new type of urban tissue: by mixing the structure of the old city fabric typology with the future scientific epicenter of Serbia, the masterplan assumes its own identity. Based on the presence of public spaces, green areas, pathways, streets and different buildings, the Campus will reach the complexity and the variety of the city fabric.
The project for the centre is conceptually and functionally structured and organized by three different horizontal layers, which react to the programmatic requirements and requested adjacencies of function and atmosphere:
_ a solid basement level is conceptually and physically connected within the landscaping of the masterplan. This level contains all the functions that support the main Exhibition Areas;
_ the ground floor exists as a void space which hosts the main exhibition space. Its free-span volume allows for maximum flexibility of the exhibitions over time; it is a suspended and transparent window that overlooks the Campus, providing views beyond the campus to the surrounding landscape of old Belgrade.
_ finally the large floating roof structure exists as the landmark element of the project, defining the form of the building and shaping the relationship between building-campus-city. The roof structure is a multifaceted object consisting of an occupiable roof terrace.
