Mentioned design
The project's aim was to develop an innovative relationship between the existing school's architecture and the proposed intervention. The design starts by considering the new classrooms not as simple pavilions or smaller parts of the whole, but as specific moments in the site, with its individual tectonic and formal identity, resulting in unexpected relationships between the existing school structure, the new classrooms and the surrounding site.
The design and the structural conception of the existing building defines a conceptual basis that has informed the design of the school extension: conceived as a cascading series of classroom-dimensioned module, the existing school blends into the surrounding landscape in an unobtrusive manner, creating a soft background with respect to the natural topography of the site.
The new school design follows the same strategy by becoming a neutral object, the horizontality and geometric regularity of the new volume follows the contours of the ground plane, creating a stronger relationship with the landscape while liberating a wide external space: the building morphology appears rigorous, the classrooms have been transformed and rotated to optimize views and the comfortable feeling of openness to the surrounding landscape.
