Obikà - mozzarella bar ® - Heatrow

The main architectural idea for Obikà at Heathrow Terminal 2 is to create a kind of sculptural element, visible from long distance and clearly recognizable from each corner of the space; a tridimensional object that occupies vertically the vast open space of the terminal.

In the world of art and architecture there is a strong tradition of small buildings or pavilions combining a plastic and sculptural design with an intense communication power such as Rodchenko's studies and projects and certain Bauhaus experiment.

Following the modernist tradition of communicating architectural object, the project of Obikà T2 has been inspired by Leonardo da Vinci's flying machines.

Based on a rigorous geometry of a square subdivided in two triangles, the Obikà T2 pavilion is in itself a kind of homage to Leonardo, the Renaissance man par excellence, symbol of the italian culture and union of intelligence and art.

Similarly to the Leonardo's machines the structure, the external shape and the geometry of the internal space of the pavilion are totally coincident and based on a unique principle: the central core, where the kitchen and the staircase are positioned, works as a vertical support from which the two wings are cantilevered while the diagonal and vertical sails of the central core works as tie beam.

The final shape and structure of the kiosk fits perfectly within the geometry of the space creating a 360° open interface visible from every corner of the terminal; with its unconventional and hybrid identity – a mysterious object, a machine, a sculpture – the Obika pavilion catch the eyes and attracts the attention as soon as people arrive in the terminal.
